Pen & Ink generally allows for more precision and finer detail than pencil.  Technological advancements now allow for subtle shading effects in the finished illustration.

Pen & ink is hard edged, as opposed to the softer impression of pencil.  The illustration at the left, although not part of an Illustrated Standard project, demonstrates the high end of detail that can be achieved with pen & ink.
